Description
The maple leaf has been used as a Canadian emblem since the 18th century. It was first used as a national symbol in 1868. “The Maple Leaf Forever” became the unofficial anthem in English-speaking Canada in 1867. From 1876 until 1901 the Maple Leaf appeared on all Canadian coins and remained on the penny after 1901. It was also used by the Royal Regiment and as a design for badgers during both World Wars and adorned the tombstones of the military graves.
